Fun in the Sun? Hardly…unless you like a little pain and suffering and one of the better “cocktail conversations.”

Starting as a way to help unemployed miners in the early 80s, the race has grown in participants and stature. Excellent chronicles can be found in the best selling book, Born to Run, which describes the classic battle between ultra legend Ann Trason and a group of Tarahumara Indians from the Copper Canyon in Mexico.
The popularity of the race has also spawned a Mountain Bike race that has attracted top talent including Lance Armstrong and Rebecca Rusch, along with several shorter distance options.
Lot’s of climbing in the coastal mountains, old growth redwoods, and steep canyons outside San Franciso make this one tough race that is worthy of a “Championship Event.” Single tracks, fire roads, and a lot’s of hills give this course variety which tests all runner’s strengths and weaknesses. The JFK 50, in Washington County, MD, was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s support of Teddy Rosevelt’s assertion, that to remain commissioned, military officers should be able to travel 50 Miles, on foot, in less than 20 hours. This lead to the first JFK 50 in 1963 which is one of the oldest Ultra Marathons in the United States.
This is a great race for first time ultra runners; it is in beautiful countryside, there are many aid stations, and not as much combined elevation change.
The Leadville 100 Bike Race began after the Trail Run cemented itself as a world class ultra marathon worthy to be included in a serious runner’s “tick list.” Ken Clouber started the run after mining went bust in the 80s and the town needed a boost. Both events cover similar territory but vary slightly due terrain and permitting.
The Headlands 100 route consists of four 25 mile loops which pass through the Rodeo Beach Start/Finish area. After racers complete a loop, they switch directions and run the opposite way. This should enable some great “high fives” during the day.
The course also has over 20,000 feet of ascent!!!
*note there is a 50 Mile option along with the 100.
