Lot’s of climbing in the coastal mountains, old growth redwoods, and steep canyons outside San Franciso make this one tough race that is worthy of a “Championship Event.” Single tracks, fire roads, and a lot’s of hills give this course variety which tests all runner’s strengths and weaknesses.
This race, in Washington County, MA, was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s support of Teddy Rosevelt’s assertion, that to remain commissioned, military officers should be able to travel 50 Miles, on foot, in less than 20 hours. The Headlands 100 route consists of four 25 mile loops which pass through the Rodeo Beach Start/Finish area. After racers complete a loop, they switch directions and run the opposite way. This should enable some great “high fives” during the day.
The course also has over 20,000 feet of ascent!!!
